John Green Flory is found on the 1850 census for Virginia with his parents and five of his six siblings. The 1856 census for Liberty-Keokuk-Iowa shows him living with his parents, and five of his sibllings. The family must have made the move from Virginia to Iowa between 1850 and 1856. The 1860 U.S. census shows him living in Keokuk Co., Iowa, residing with some of his "Stoner" (his mother's) relatives. A number of the Stoners apparently made the move together with John Green and Susannah.

The 1870 US census shows John back in Virginia married to Sarah and a four year old daughter named Ida. It seems John returned back to Virginia to marry. John Green and Sarah had ten children including John Edward. The 1880 census names the oldest six as: Ida Bell (age 11); Susan E. (age 9); William H. (age 8); Edward (age 6); Maggie D. (age 4); Luty Lee (age 2). This 1880 census indicates the last three were born in West Virginia. The oldest three were born in Virginia (probably in Rockingham Co, VA). Sometime after 1888, he migrated to Van Buren Co, Arkansas, where he taught school. There was a first child, Swithen F., born in 1867 and also died in 1867.

The 1900 census for Arkansas, Van Buren Co., Mtn TWP, shows John Green living with his second wife Louisa, and his three youngest children with Sarah: Jacob Luther; Ada Rose; Sadie Virgil. John and Louisa had married in 1899. Louisa was a widow with two "Brown" children and three "Maxwell" children.
One of the Maxwell children, Sarah Jane, married John Edward Flory, the son of John Green Flory and Sarah Virgil Wright.

Louisa and John Green eventually moved to Utah were they died in October and December of 1914, respectively.

John was a Cabinet Maker in Utah. He was a teacher while in Arkansas.

John's grave marker seems to have an inscription error which gives him an October death month. Utah death records list him with a December death month.

The John Green Flory of this memorial is not to be confused with another John G Flory, of similar birth year. One is identified with the middle name of "Green", the other with just a middle initial of "G". John Green was born in Virginia. John "G" was born in Ohio.
