Sybel Catlett, 90, died Thursday August 18, 2011. Viewing will be Sunday during the day at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Service at 10 a.m. Monday at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

SYBEL CATLETT
ABILENE

Sybel Catlett, 90, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011, in Abilene.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 22, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, with Reverend Stan Allcorn and Reverend Jack Ridlehoover officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street. Viewing will be Sunday during the day at the funeral home.

Sybel was born March 7, 1921 to Edna (Harpole) and Arthur Wright in Eupora, Mississippi. She graduated from Linn Consolidated High School in Doddsville, Mississippi in 1939. Sybel attended Sunflower Junior College. She graduated from Mississippi Women's University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. Sybel married John Catlett on November 27, 1947 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They moved to Abilene from Glenmora, Louisiana in 1956. Sybel was employed by the United States Government as a Position Classifier in the Civil Service Commission. She was a member of several organizations: The American Association of University Womens; Abilene Garden Club; Abilene Woman's Club; Abilene Oil Wives; the Wednesday Bridge Club; and Pioneer Drive Baptist Church where she taught 7th and 8th Grade girls for several years and sang in the choir. Sybel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grand-mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Catlett on December 3, 1988; and a son, Keith Catlett on June 3, 1977.

Survivors include a son, Bill Catlett and wife, Jackie, of Austin, Texas; two brothers, W.C. Wright of Florence, Alabama and John Wright of Rruleville, Mississippi; two sisters, Marjorie Johnson of Doddsville, Mississippi and Ruth Easom of Lake Village, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Sean Catlett and wife, Shannon of London and Blake Catlett and wife, Lindsay, of New York City; and great-grandson, Calder Catlett of London.
