He came to Wayne County in the spring of 1876 when he was five years old, with his parents, his brothers, Henry and George, and his half-brothers, Silas Morrell and Charles Hoalst. Hyrum married Minnie Albrecht, a daughter of Mina Haker and George Albrecht, March 27, 1894 in Fremont, Utah, solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple, June 7, 1922. They are the parents of 11 children.

Hyrum was an industrious, resourceful, and disciplined man, and experienced a great deal of success in his business, agricultural, and community endeavors.

Hyrum and Minnie cared for his father, William Wilson Morrell, who lost his sight in his final few years, until his death in 1907, as well as his mother, Julia, who lived in an adjacent sawed log home on their farm until her death in 1913.
