WARREN - Kenneth E. Allen Sr., 84, died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Cedar Creek Health Care Center in Warren.
He was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Painesville, the son of the late Maynard W. and Dorothy M. Collins Allen Sr.
Ken was a 1947 graduate of Harvey High School in Painesville, where he played basketball and participated in the band. He then enlisted, in 1946 while in high school, in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1947 having been in the 45th Engin. Constr. in Japan.
Following his military career, he went on to study at Ohio State University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in biology, specializing in wildlife management in 1952.
Ken began his working career while he was going to college, as Ken worked for the City of Painesville, Cemetery and Parks Division. He went on and worked for the Columbus Metropolitan Park District, where he worked as a naturalist until he graduated from Ohio State. He furthered his career by getting a job as a biologist with the State of Ohio, Division of Wildlife in Akron from 1953 to 1968. In this time period, he was one of the biologists credited in finding and observing an extinct species of geese, the Great Canada Goose.
In December of 1968, he worked for the City of Akron, Watershed Section, where he was the watershed superintendent. He then retired in December 1979.
In his youth, while in grade school and high school, he worked as a paper boy, bell hop, nursery and greenhouse laborer, stable hand and Boy Scout camp leader.
Kenneth was a member of Southington Christian Church. He had a great sense of humor, he was a jokester, a kindhearted, jovial soul. He will be sadly missed.
Survivors include his sons, Kenneth E. (Kristina) Allen Jr. of Bristolville and Todd G. Allen of Warren; his stepsons, Philip James (Debbie) Stroup of Qatar and Raymond (Rhonda) Stroup of Phoenix, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Other than his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death on Sept. 8, 2003, by his wife, the former Myrtle Ann Tucke, with whom he was united in marriage Dec. 10, 1968; and a brother, Maynard W. Allen Jr.
Victory services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where family and friends may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Champion Township Cemetery.
The family requests that material contributions be made to the National Wildlife Federation, P.O. Box 1583, Merrifield, VA 22116-1583, or to Southington Christian Church, in his memory.
