Arthur ABRAHAM was born at home, on the ABRAHAM farm, in Section 35, Center Township, rural Henry County, Iowa; the farm was southeast of Mount Pleasant, the county seat of Henry County. His parents were John McCue and Catharine (née BARTLETT) ABRAHAM. Arthur was the sixth of seven children born to John and Catharine. His siblings were: Lot William, Margaret, James Willard, Charles, John Edward, and Roy Clair.
Arthur was known as the family workaholic because he was always busy working on whatever needed to be done. When he was quite young, he accidentally amputated his thumb and forefinger on his right hand while trying to operate a hand-held corn sheller (this is why he was listed on some censuses as maimed). Despite the lost, he always figured out ways to manage to do things by using his right hand as well as his left. He was exceptionally proud of the fact he had learned to write as well as anyone by placing the ink pen between his third and fourth fingers of his right hand.
His first marriage was to Elizabeth Catherine "Bessie" MANSFIELD on March 15, 1906 in Valley, Douglas County, Nebraska. On January 2, 1907, Bessie gave birth to their son, Russell Mansfield ABRAHAM. Following the baby's birth, Bessie became ill with pneumonia and died February 5, 1907. She was buried at the Elk City Cemetery in Elk City, Douglas County, Nebraska.
On November 20, 1908, Arthur and Rosalind "Rose" MASTERS were joined in marriage in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Two children were born to them: a daughter, Bernice, and a son, Arthur Ward ABRAHAM. They lived on the ABRAHAM family ranch which had been founded by Arthur's father, John. Upon John's death in 1913, each of his five children (Margaret, James Willard, Charles, Arthur, and Roy) inherited eighty acres of the four hundred acres of the rich Elkhorn River Valley which comprised the ranch (Note: Two of John and Catharine's children, Lot and John, had died during 1902 and 1882 respectively.). Arthur raised cattle, grew crops, and had an orchard. He, along with his family, was the only one of John and Catharine's children to remain on the land he inherited until his death.
Arthur was a very thoughtful person and was always there to help when needed.
