Catharine "Kate" a.k.a. "Kitty" BARTLETT was born October 3, 1842 in Rush County, Indiana. Her parents were John William BARTLETT and Catharine CARMICHAEL (they had married on March 2, 1830 in Dearborn County, Indiana). Kitty was one of ten children born to John and Catharine. Five of her siblings died in infancy; known siblings were: Mary Frances (1832-1892), William A. (1835-1898), Jesse Duncan (1838-1909), Margaret "Maggie" (1846-1916), and Eliza (1850-1850).
During 1854, Catharine's parents moved their family to the newly form state of Iowa. The state of Iowa had originally been a part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase; it became a territory in 1838 and a state in 1846. They settled in Henry County near Mt. Pleasant; they eventually moved near Salem. On the 1854 State Census of Iowa, John Bartlett is identified as a head-of-household in Mount Pleasant, Center Township, Henry County with four unidentified females (probable identities: wife Catharine, and their three daughters: Mary, Catharine, and Margaret). The couple's two son aren't indicated but they are old enough, ages 19 and 16, to be temporarily away from home working on harvest crews to help with spring planting or fall harvesting.
On February 5, 1865, Catharine married John McCue ABRAHAM in Mt. Pleasant. The wedding had originally been planned by John and his older brother, Captain Lot ABRAHAM, as a double wedding where John married Catharine and Lot married Sarah "Neal" ALDEN at the ceremony. Unfortunately, the brothers' double wedding plans had to be abandoned owing to Lot being unable to get a furlough in the latter part of the American Civil War from his military duties.
Sarah ALDEN (Lot's fiancée), in a May 5, 1865 letter to Captain Lot ABRAHAM (a soldier with Company D, 4th Iowa Cavalry Regiment), wrote him that his sister-in-law Kitty sent a letter to her stating "... how swift the time has fled ... Just 12 weeks a married woman & SO HAPPY."
Catharine, John, and their children were baptized and entered into full membership with the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant on September 15, 1878.
In March of 1881, John and Catharine moved their family to Nebraska and settled in the Elkhorn River Valley in Douglas County where their homestead grew into a successful cattle ranch of at least 400 acres. Nebraska became their permanent home.
John and Catharine had six sons and one daughter: Lot William, Margaret "Maggie", James Willard, Charles, John E., Arthur, and Roy Clair. (Refer to the 1898 family photo posted below Catharine's photo; John and Catharine are shown with all their children except for John E. who drowned, at the age of seven, in the Rawhide Creek in Douglas County, Nebraska on May 31, 1882.) Roy Clair was the only child born in Nebraska to John and Catharine; their other children were all born in Iowa.
Per Susannah "Susie" ABRAHAM (John McCue's older sister - also pictured in the ABRAHAM Family photo above), Catharine ABRAHAM née BARTLETT unexpectedly died at the family ranch May 3, 1901; the family was unaware of any health problems Catharine had. The Evening World-Herald (Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska) newspaper reported she died from neuralgia of the heart.*
Catharine was laid to rest in the Elk City Cemetery beside her son, John E. ABRAHAM. At her death, in addition to her husband, surviving children and grandchildren, Catharine was survived by one sister, Mrs. Orrin Elliot HAZEN (née Margaret "Maggie" BARTLETT) of Arlington, Nebraska and one brother, Jesse Duncan BARTLETT of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Neuralgia of the heart: Neuralgia means "nerve pain"—an elliptical description, because pain is felt only through nerves. Probably the condition meant here is angina pectoris, the pain felt when the heart muscle is starved for oxygen (because the coronary arteries are blocked by arteriosclerosis). The pain of an actual myocardial infarction or heart attack would be similar.
