Henry was never a Birkam. The monument was probably erected by either his daughter Mary or his son George, both of whom changed their name from Bierkamp to Birkam.

He was born in the Kingdom of Hannover which is probably Niedersachsen today. He arrived in the United States in May of 1860 aboard the Nord America out of the port of Bremen. He was 11 years old at the time. When the 1860 census was taken that summer he was in Hamtramck, Michigan and was 12 years old. He may have been born about July of 1848. His parents were William and Fredericke Court Bierkamp. Court is not a German name so is probably a translation of something else. Birth and death years are estimates.

Henry was a puddler at the iron mill in Wyandotte.
