Bert J. Akerley Called by Death
Very Early Arrow Creek Bench Settler Answers last Summons
Residents of this section of Fergus county were shocked last Saturday to learn of the death at Lewistown of Bert J. Akerley, one of the pioneer homesteaders of the Arrow creek bench locality, after several months of failing health following a light stroke last spring. His death occurred at his home in Lewistown where they had resided for about a year. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Creel chapel in Lewistown with the Rev. W.S. Traweek, pastor of the Methodist church of that city officiating. Burial was made in the Lewistown City cemetery.
Bert J. Akerley was born September 12, 1869, near Titusville, Pennsylvania, and moved later to Ohio where he was married to Adelle E. Stewart of Vienna, that state. There they resided until the year 1904 when they came to Montana and located on their homestead about nine miles north of this place. There they made their home for the greater part of 36 years during which time they witnessed many and varied changes, not only in that neighborhood, but in the county and state as well.
The deceased had been a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Church since early youth and was an ideal neighbor and friend, always being looked up to and highly respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance--and he numbered his friends by the hundreds. It is needless to say that his passing causes an irreparable loss to his home community and the county.
He is survived by his widow and one son, Stewart Akerley, of Fairfield, (who the most of his life resided near his parents), also by five grandchildren, Beulah Maria, James Eugene, Ernest Calvin, Walter Stewart, and Veanna Louise Akerley.
The people of this part of the county deeply sympathize with the bereaved ones in their great loss.
