A Venerable Lady's Death.
Our Newry correspondent sends us the following: Mrs. Mary Benton, who died at the residence of her granddaughter, Mrs William McCoy, in this place, Sunday morning at 5.30, was aged 88 years and 2 months. She was born in York, York County, Pa., on December 1, 1802, At the age of 12 years, she, with her parents (Branstetter) moved to Morrison's Cove, where she remained until 1819, when she married Uriah Benton, after which they moved to the foot of the Allegheny mountains, and from there to this place, where they lived together in happiness until 1872, when it pleased God to call Mr. Benton home. They were both consistent members of the Catholic church. The deceased was a good Christian, a good neighbor and an unusually good woman among the sick. She would rise at the mid hour of night and travel through all kinds of weather if called upon by the sick. Who can estimate or measure the worth and usefulness of such a person's untiring patience in a community? A remarkable fact in the history of this old lady is the number of descendants, there being born to her twelve children of whom eight were boys and four were girls. Of those living Jonathan, of McKees, James, of Helena, Montana; Margaret, wife of Adam Lambertson, of Gosford, Armstrong County, Pa.; Frank, of Renovo, Clinton County, Pa.; Uriah W., of Newry, Pa.; Matilda, wife of Barnabas O'Connor, Altoona, Pa.; Jane, wife of George Sias, of 127 Bausman St., Knox Boro, Pittsburgh, and George, of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; John, Joseph and Thomas, also Amanda, widow of Alex McConnell, having been called away at an earlier period to that home beyond the sea of trouble and sorrowing. Hence her entire descendants consists of twelve children, seventy-two grandchildren, seventy-four great-grandchildren and some four or five great-great-grandchildren, making 163 descendants. Funeral at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in this place Tuesday, the 3d inst.
