Regimental records provide:
John Benton mustered into Company E of the 125th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1862 (Bates, Vol IV, p.118). He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, and captured at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863(Regimental History, p.143). Since he is not listed among the 91 'Severely Wounded' at Antietam he is most likely among the
84 'Slightly Wounded and Not Reported,' as inscribed on the Regimental monument at the Antietam National Battlefield.

In the 1850 Census for Blair County (p. 201b12), the following family group is found in Blair Township (recorded 6/11-6/16/1850):

John Benton, age 27 years
Ann Benton, age 25 years
John Benton, age 6 years
James Benton, age 3 years
Mary J. Benton, age 6 months

1860 Census (p.43,sh.509) in Taylor Township (recorded 9/20/1860):

John Benton, age 37 years
Ann Benton, age 36 years
John Benton, age 17 years
James Benton, age 13 years
Mary J. Benton, age 10 years
Marfort, age 5 years (dau)
William, age 1 year

Calculating from approximate ages on headstone and censuses, conceivable range of birth dates is 6/17/1822 to 9/21/1822. In this range dates 9/1/1822 and later assume the age on the tombstone is rounded up to the nearest whole year.
