JOHN S. BAICHTAL, one of the oldest persons residing in Sac City, Iowa, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Viva, Mr and Mrs Chris IVERSON, in this city on Friday morning, May 14,1909, in his 87th year.
Mr. BAICHTAL's health had been failing for a number of months and he finally succumbed to the infirmities incident to old age. The funeral was held on Sunday morning at half past 9 o'clock at the IVERSON residence. The funeral discourse was given by the Rev. J. Irving Brown, pastor of the Christian Church, and the music was by Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Heptonstall.
At the grave in OAKLAND CEMETERY, in Sac City, Iowa, Mr. J. S. Wallace offered prayer.
The pallbearers were 6 grandsons of the decedent, namely: S. Jay, Blaine, Guy and Fay BAICHTAL, Ivan IVERSON and R. YOUNG, the young man last named a resident of Des Moines, Iowa.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were the decedent's son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs William (Sabre) HESTER of Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. BAICHTAL was born near Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA. July 17, 1822. When a mere lad he walked to Ohio and worked there saving money with which he brought his mother West. He went to Michigan and
resided there for a number of years in the vicinity of Buchanan, Michigan.
About the time of the gold excitement of 1849 in California he joined a caravan for the far West and crossed IA into NE, but decided that this
state provided sufficient El Dorado for him, and turned back and settled in Dallas County, Iowa, town of Adel. There on Oct. 9, 1855 he married Mrs. Louisa (DAVIDSON) WRIGHT, widow of Jackson G. WRIGHT, who was his companion for over 47 years, dying in Des Moines, Iowa, as the New Year of 1903 was ringing in, on church bells.
Previously Mr. BAICHTAL had been married 3 times, but in every case his companionship was cut short by the
interventon of death.
By his third wife Nancy Jane, there was born to him a daughter, Mrs. William (Sabre Priscilla BAICHTAL) HESTER, of Des Moines, Iowa.
There was born to him and his last wife Louisa, 5 children, one, Lillie May BAICHTAL, of whom died in infancy. The 4 who survived are John Hastings, Charles Edward, Ely Layfatte, and Viva Estelle BAICHTAL.
In his early years in Iowa, Mr. BAICHTAL was a freight hauler between Keokuk and Des Moines, Iowa. He had learned the trade of blacksmith and also worked at his trade as the oppurtunity came. In Dallas County, Iowa he spent a number of years in farming.
When the war (Civil War)came Mr. BAICHTAL went back to Michigan with his family and resided several years at Buchanan, but he returned to Dallas County at the close of the war.
About 25 years ago he came to Sac City, Iowa to live and much of time conducted a blacksmith shop, continuing the business until he was 80. On the day he was 85 he went to a shop in this city and shod a team of horses to show his friends that his hand had not lost its cunning, nor his arm its strength.
For a half a century Mr. BAICHTAL was a member of the Christian Church and a sincere disciple of the Nazarene. He leaves 25 decendents, who can refer with pride to his long and useful life.
