Middle name Arnold?Worked as a cooper as a young man.Enlisted in 154th NY Infantry 12 Aug 1862 during Civil War, listing his occupation as "mechanic". In May of 1863, Hiram overstayed a 10-day furlough to visit sick wife - on the authority of a local doctor. His regiment apparently did not agree, and listed him as AWOL and then as "deserted",. When he discovered this, Hiram departed for Canada, returning in 1864 to re-enlist under the alias Arnold Bennett (12th NY Cavalry), collecting a $25 enlistment bounty. He later collected the pension for his service as Arnold Bennett, but not as Hiram Stimson!.
