Susan S. Smith died July 25th, 1921, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ira E. Smith, aged 83 years, three months and 26 days, death being caused from a paralytic stroke suffered July 19, 1921.

Susan S. Lee was born at Batavia, New York, March 31st, 1838. She came to Decorah, Iowa, when she married John N. Smith, June 24th 1855. Soon after they moved to a farm in Allamakee county. To this union eight children were born, seven of whom have gone before. Her husband died June 19th, 1895.

She is survived by one daughter, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Lee of Decorah; and a half sister Carrie Hislop of Idaho.

Since her husband's death she has made her home with her children. She was an earnest, consistent member of Bethel U.B. church for about 45 years. She was a good woman and a Christian.

The funeral was held in the Bethel church at 22 a.m., July 28, conducted by Rev. H.A. Hayes. Interment in the Minert cemetery.

In this connection the family wish to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks for the kindly assistance and comforting words during the illness and burial of their mother.

Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were - Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Yarwood, Harold and Lloyd Yarwood, Mrs. Ernest Yarwood, and Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Barfoot, all of Decorah. (The Postville Herald, July 1921)

Note: Susan (Lee) Smith was wife of John M. [or N.] Smith. Their daughter Jennie M. Smith was married to Ira E. Smith, who was the grandson of Reuben Smith of the Old Stone House fame. Ira E. was the son of David and Marene (Barham) Smith. The Old Stone House was located in Allamakee County, Iowa.

In addition to the 7 children linked below, Susan predeceased her daughter Olive E. Yarwood.
