John Brown was a collier who survived a total of 23 days trapped under ground after a large part of the local Kilgrammie pit collapsed. Brown was rescued, however was very weak and died three days later. A full transcript of the headstone and the story of the rescue are recorded alongside the grave in the churchyard.
