Ellen (Elenor?) Ansell was born in Virginia or West Virgina in 1834. Her family moved to Calhoun County, Illinois sometime in the 1850's.

Ellen lived in Calhoun County with her parents, Jacob Ansell and Nancy Ann "Anna" (nee Joy) Ansell, and her 5 youngest siblings. Her father was a farmer.

Census notes indicate that Ellen was unable to speak or read in 1860.

Ellen's mother, Anna, died in 1868. After her death, Ellen's father married Mrs. Margaret Cloninger on 14 Oct 1869 in Calhoun County. They then moved to Moniteau County, Missouri.

Ellen's father died in 1877.

In 1880, Ellen lived at the county poor farm in Hardin. By that time, records said that she was blind and suffered convulsions. It was also noted that she had an intellectual disability.

Ellen's brother, Malachi, died of tuberculosis in 1881. Another brother, John, also died of tuberculosis in 1889. [See obituaries below.]

Ellen died at the county poor farm in the fall of 1899 at the age of 65 years. She was survived by her step-mother.

It seems very likely that the Ellen Ansell, whose burial is listed at the County Poor Farm Cemetery in records kept by the Calhoun County Historical Society, was the same person as Elenor C. Ansell, whose headstone is located at Summit Grove Cemetery in Kampsville.

Whether Ellen's body was actually buried at the poor farm near Hardin or at Summit Grove Cemetery is unknown. The possibility also exists that she could have been buried at the poor farm and reinterred later at Summit Grove. The headstone at Summit Grove appears to be newer than those commonly used in the 1890's in Calhoun County.

Children: None.

Salley J. Ansell
