Lorinda was one of seven children born in Independence, NY in Allegany County to Dr. Anthony Barney and his first wife, Roxa Chapin.
Both the Chapin and Barney families have deep roots in MA, settling there in the 1600s.

After her mother's death in 1838 when Lorinda was twelve, her father married Henrietta Horton and gave Lorinda six step siblings.

Lorinda lived with Anson Albert Amsbry as his common-law wife and had two children, Anson Eugene born in 1848 and Ida born in 1855.
Anson and Lorinda married in 1863.
In 1883 steps were taken to dissolve the marriage, but when Anson died in 1885 they were still married.

Lorinda supported herself with her husband's small Civil War pension and as a housekeeper until her death in 1908.
