As recorded in the book "In Remembrance" found at the White Lake Library, Sarah's mother died in 1882, when Sarah was 17. This left Sarah with the responsibilities of raising her young siblings and keeping the house. Sarah eventually eloped with Elmer Wyckoff. They moved to Kansas, where her brother Frank was living with their mother's sister, Wilhemina (Minnie) Hibner Tressin.

Their first daughter, Mabel was born in Saline, Kansas. They moved back to Michigan within a few years after, and eventually owned property on the north side of M-59 near present day, White Lake Township offices.
