COMMANDERY OF THE STATE OF WISCONSIN
The accompanying tribute of respect to the memory of our late companion, IN MORIAM

ROBERT SCHOFIELD IS DEAD
In announcing the unwelcome death of Colonel Robert Schofield,the Wisconsin Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States feels warranted in saying the Commandery loses one of its most patriotic, honorable and respected members.
Robert Schofield was born in Carlton Township, Orleans County,New York, December 22, 1837, and died at Kilbourn, Wis., May 22, 1918.
When Robert Schofield was 24 years old he enclisted as a private in the First Vermont Cavalry, at Brattleboro, Vermont, July, 1861 (Company F).
He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant October 17, 1861;
Captain October 4, 1862;
Major November 18, 1864.
He was promoted to Lieut. Colonel, by Brevet, by the President, March 13, 1865, and was promoted to Colonel, by Brevet, by the President, on same date March 13, 1865. These promotions by the President dated July 24, 1867, but effective from March 13, 1865.
Colonel Schofield participated in all the engagements with the First Vermont Cavalry, except for the time confined in Rebel Prison (see history of 1st Vermont Cavalry). He was in command under Pope the regiment was with the Army of the Potomac at the battle of Gettysburg. He lost his left eye, and was seriously wounded at Hagerstown, Md., when captured and sent to Libby Prison for 9 months, he was transferred to rebel prisons at Macon, Charleston and Columbia.
Robert Schofield married 25 Nov 1867 Josephine Lophelia Holly at Kilbourn Wisconsin. They had 5 children, Grace, Marguerite, Halli, Paul and Robert.
From his obit "During many years as manager/owner of Schofield cottage, in his day one of the most popular resort hotels at the Dells, his acquaintance extending to many remote sections of the union, and always in the same degree of admiring esteem...."
He and Josephine would "winter" in Long Beach, CA.
