Elisabeth Genders Akins, 82, of North Bend, WA, passed away Dec. 27, 2003. A
memorial Mass was held Jan. 2 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in
Crossville. Father Patrick Brownell officiated, with interment held at the
Akins Cemetery in Winesap, TN.
Mrs. Akins was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Sittard, The Netherlands.
She immigrated to the United States in 1953 and became a naturalized citizen
in 1958.
In 1958, she met and married Billie Akins of Crossville in Los Angeles, CA
and the couple settled in Southern California to raise two children,
Michelle and Gregory.
In 1986, Mrs. Akins retired after a long career in the medical field, where
she worked primarily as a radiation oncology technician. The couple retired
to Bill's hometown of Crossville in 1994.
Mrs. Akins' grace and class impressed everyone who met her. She was a warm,
generous soul and a rare treasure of a lady. Her greatest joy in her later
years was undoubtedly her only grandchild, Maggie.
Survivors include her son, Gregory Akins of Las Flores, CA; daughter and
son-in-law, Michelle and Tim Wood of North Bend, WA; granddaughter, Margaret
Elisabeth Wood of North Bend, WA; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Donald
Akins, Tom Akins, Gwelda Gannon, Jim Akins, Kitty Hale and Charlie Akins,
all of Crossville, and Nancy Dodgins of Charleston, SC; and nephew, Harie
Genders and his wife, Toos, and their daughters, Sigrid and Miriam of
Susteren, The Netherlands.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Akins.
