Filmore was the son of Sarah Greene. In 1870 at the age of eleven months he was living with his grandparents Archibald & Barbara Greene. In 1880 he was living with his mother Sarah Greene and his step-father Granville Shell. He married Sallie L. Hendrix around 1890 and they had 10 children. Filmore was born and lived all his life in Elk township, Wilkes County, NC which was on the border to Watauga County.

NOTE:
The birth date on his grave marker is definitely in error. According to the 1870 he was 11 months old and in the 1920 census he was 51, Filmore was born in 1869. He died at the age of 55 and not 40. His widow provided the information for his Death Certificate that Filmore was born on June 13, 1869.
