Amos is a son of William Gallup and Sarah Elizabeth Strong. He was born during a chaotic time in the family's history. His father had two wives and two families. The Federal Marshals were seeking to put his father in prison. William had moved Amos' mother with her family to Sevier County, Utah during the time that Amos was born. Later they moved back to Springville and then to Idaho about 1904.

Amos married Lola Gertrude Morgan on December 23, 1911. They farmed at Ririe. Amos and Lola became parents to seven children: Emmett Eliel, a stillborn son, Irvin Morgan, Joseph Verdell, William Blaine, Elizabeth Loretta, and Ruth Louise.

Amos became sick with pneumonia in the spring of 1925 and died.
