Maria Policastro Ursi (Maria Urso) came to the United States from Italy as an 11 year old, traveling with her father Pasquale Policastro. They arrived in New York on Dec 5, 1893 aboard the ship Fulda, sailing from Naples. They settled in Newark, New Jersey where she met and married Paolo Ursi on Feb 14, 1899. She was 16 at the time and Paolo was 29. On October 15, 1902, when her husband became a citizen, she, through her marriage, also gained her citizenship. Maria and her husband had 8 children but lost their daughter Rosa to pneumonia when she was an infant. They raised their other 7 children and remained in Newark until their deaths.
