Richard was the son of Festus Young and Rachael Graham Young. He married Leannah Pocahontas Simmons on February 28, 1867 in Upshur County, West Virginia. They were the parents of Anna F., Loyal Batell, Clara Jane, Corwin Wallace, Bessie Lee, Festus Ralph and Asa Clyde.
