"JOHN PETER BUCHHOLZ (Uncle John), the 5th son of Johann Buchholz and Elizabeth Bruehl was the twin brother of William George Buchholz. John was a very big man physically. During the 1940's and 50's he probably tipped the scales at well over 300 pounds.

"As a youngster he too worked in the coal mines with his father and brothers. Later on as a young man he attended Embalming School and entered into the funeral business with his brothers William and Fred as partners in the Brechler-Buchholz Company in Belleville, Illinois.

"He later moved to East St. Louis, Illinois where he was employed by Kruse Undertakers. While living in East St. Louis he was elected as coroner of St. Clair County.

"On moving to St. Louis, John was employed by Henry Leidner Undertaking Company in North St. Louis where he eventually became the head Embalmer.

"John and his brother William were both quite successful as embalmers and became well known in their chosen profession. They were instrumental in forming the Embalmer's Union in St. Louis and were elected as the 1st and 2nd presidents of the union.

"As far as I have been able to ascertain they were the only two embalmer's licensed to operate in both Illinois and Missouri.

"After retiring from the Henry Leidner Undertaking Company, John again went into business with his brother William at the Buchholz Mortuary on West Florissant in St. Louis. He continued with the firm for many years.

"During the later years of his life his health began to fail quite rapidly and he eventually was placed in the Halls Ferry Nursing Home where in 1969 he passed away from a heart attack."
