Born in Chicago, she attended schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Michigan before coming to Muncie where she graduated from Central High School. She then attended Ball State University on an Altrusa Club Scholarship, graduating in 1950.
With her parents, Harvey and Velma Mae Whitmarsh Bollinger, ministers and majors with the Salvation Army, she owned and operated the Casa Blanca Restaurant, which was located on U.S. 35 near radio station WLBC, in the early 1950s.
In 1952, she married Garland F. Bookout, and together they owned and operated the Approved Ice Cream Co. in Richmond during the mid-and late-1950s. Mrs. Bookout taught piano for several years and was active with the Salvation Army.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Daniel; three daughters, Luanna, Cynthia, and Laurel; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jessie and Matthew Bradshaw.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Parson Mortuary-Adams Chapel, with burial in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Germantown, west of Richmond. Calling at the mortuary is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
