s/o John and Ruth Miller from Madison Co, KY then moved to Mine La Motte, MO. The Miller's were good friends with Azariah and Amanda Martin. When James' mother Ruth died giving birth, he was adopted by the Martin's.

Sometime before Amanda's death, James went to Texas to study medicine at Beaumont. He stayed to practice in Purmela, TX for awhile but returned to MO in 1900 to finish his study of medicine. He graduated from medical school in St Louis in 1901.

He practiced medicine in Pilot Knob, then Redmondville, before joining the Army in 1918 during WWI. After the war he moved back to Edgehill, MO opened an office for a short time. He then moved back to the family farm on Rifle Range Road and practiced medicine in the Arcadia Valley area.

Dr Martin served as a physician during WWII at the Small Arms Plant in St Louis.

He worked in x-ray and trained those who wanted to learn the art of taking x-rays.

James was also a musician who wrote and copyrighted songs.
