Born Jakob Fickeisen in Lauerhof, Otterberg, ,Rheinland-Pfalz the son of Phillip Pierre Fickeisen & Maria Goedel. He emigrated to New York in 1851, aboard the "Kate Hunter". He married Barbara Loesch in Lancaster, NY. They homesteaded a 40 acre farm, southwest of Chesaning, MI in 1860.
