Funeral services for Matt Leskovec, 76, of 302 N St., a former Rock Springs city councilman, were conducted Monday at 9 a.m. at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, the Rev. Michael Butler officiating. Burial was in the Paul J. Wataha Memorial Park section of Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul Zancanella, Don Zancanella, grandsons, Lewis Zaversnik, Albert Allais, Frank Yugovich and Val Kalan.
Rosary was recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church. Honor guard of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus included Anton Yugovich, John Case, John Copyak and Michael Castellano.
Mr. Leskovec was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County Thursday, March 14, after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Leskovec served two terms on the Rock Springs City Council, the first two-year-term in 1939 and 1940. In 1971 Mr. Leskovec was elected to serve the two-year unexpired term of the late Frank Ferlic. He represented Ward II in both terms.
Born Sept. 18, 1897 in Triji Kralje, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, he was the son of the late Anton and Mariana Leskovec. He attended schools in Rock Springs.
He married the former Louise Luzan at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Rock Springs Oct. 2, 1921. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1971.
As a young man, Mr. Leskovec worked in the coal mines and operated a dry goods business for 10 years. Later he was employed by the American Express office and retired in 1966 after 22 years with the firm.
He was a trustee for SS. Cyril and Methodius Church since 1941 and was secretary of Slovenski Dom for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Forestors, St. Joseph's Lodge KSKJ No. 122 and the Slovenia Lodge SNPJ No. 10.
Surviving are his wife, Louise of Rock Springs; one daughter, Mrs. James (Lillian) Zancanella of Laramie; three grandchildren, Paul, Donald and Jean Zancanella, all of Laramie, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Louise Elsie Leskovec, three brothers, Anton, Lawrence and Jospeh; and one sister, Mary Zust.
