As a young man, he lived in Dawson, GA and was a clerk at the 10-cent store there. According to his 1918 WWI draft card, James Elmo Poole was living at 131 College St. in Americus. He was a merchant and farmer, with his business address being 1002 North Lee St., Americus.

Son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Chapman and Americus Mayor Dead
News reaching here Friday afternoon announcing the death of Hon. J. Elmore Poole, of Americus, was a great shock to his many friends here. A number of years ago Mr. Poole married Miss Lula Chapman, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Chapman, and one of Butler's most admired young women, who with her children have the tenderest sypathy of the entire citizenry of Butler in the great affliction that has befallen them in the death of their husband and father. The following account of the death of Mr. Poole comes from Americus:
Americus Sept 15, J. Elmore Poole, 49, mayor of this city died this afternoon at Plains hospital near here. Death resulting, according to physicians from a stroke of paralysis. The stroke was the second sustained by Mayor Poole within recent months. He had been a patient at the hospital during two weeks past and this week underwent an operation for appendicitis. His condition had been most alarming since the operation was performed early Wednesday. Besides being mayor of Americus (GA), Mr. Poole was a member of the board of county commissioners of Sumter county, and had been during several years extensively engaged in farming and merchandising in association with his brother here. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louisa Poole of Americus, his widow and four children, Mrs. Sarah Poole of Florida; Misses Mary E. Poole and Myrtle Poole and one son, Alton Poole, all of Americus. Three brothers, J. H. Poole, J. P. Poole and Clark Poole, all of Americus and two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Mathis of Charleston S. C. and Mrs. Edward Hutchinson of Perry, Fl, also survive him. Funeral services for Mayor Poole were held Saturday morning from the Central Baptist Church here.
