US Navy Rear Admiral. Mertz graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1872. After graduation Mertz was assigned to Coast Survey duty. In the following years he served on the Alliance, Omaha, Minnesota, Omaha, Constellation, Michigan, Fern, Essex and the Glacier. He was promoted to Commander in 1902 and was assigned as Captain of the USS Newport in 1903. In 1909 he was named the Commandant, Naval Stations Cavite and Olongapo, in the Philippines. He was appointed Rear Admiral in late 1910 and by February of 1912 he became Governor of the Naval Home in Philadelphia. Mertz retired from the Navy on March 26, 1913. The Navy later commissioned the Destroyer Mertz DD-691 in his honor.
