Mr. William Ray "Bill" Blakemore, 87, of Bartlesville, died at 5:10 A.M. on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.
Funeral services for Mr. Blakemore will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Kevin Tully officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded by the James H. Teel American Legion Post # 105. Funeral services and interment will be under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
Casket escorts will include David Blakemore, Dennis Blakemore, James Blakemore, Bob Burnett, Bob Bishop and Don Brurud. Honorary casket escorts will include John Gwaltney and Charles Hankins.
Friends who wish may call for visitation at the Stumpff Funeral Home from 9 A.M. till 9 P.M. on Sunday and Monday as the casket will remain closed at the services.
A memorial fund has been established and those who wish may send their contributions in his name to Bluestem Therapeutic Riding, P.O. Box 121, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 74005.
Mr. Blakemore was born at Stillwell, Oklahoma on August 17, 1923 the son of Willie Ray and Una Mae (Ables) Blakemore. He grew up and received his education in Stillwell where he graduated from high school in 1941. Following his graduation he worked briefly in the aircraft industry in California until entering the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served during World War II at the rank of Staff Sergeant as a waist gunner on a B-17 bomber and was awarded the Air Medal. Following his Honorable Discharge he returned to Oklahoma where he attended Oklahoma A & M at Stillwater. He was married to Dorothy Jean Gibson on December 19, 1947 at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M with a Bachelors of Science degree in Animal Husbandry in 1949 and he continued his education, later earning his Masters degree in Rural Adult Education in 1960. Following his graduation he served as the Assistant County Extension Agent for the OSU Extension Services in Cherokee County and later in Tulsa County. He came to Washington County Extension Office in 1957 where he served as the County Extension Agent until 1967. Mr. Blakemore then began his affiliation with the Frank Phillips Foundation, Inc., as the General Manager and Secretary/Treasurer until his retirement in 1990. The Blakemore family has been active members of the First United Methodist Church since 1957 where Bill served as a member of various church committees. Mr. Blakemore was a board member of the Bartlesville YMCA where he had served a term as President and was the fund drive chairman for the construction of the new building, was the founder and first president of the Bluestem Farm and Ranch Club that was active for 50 years, had served as a board member and president of the Bluestem Quarter Horse Association and was a board member of the Bluestem Therapeutic Horseback Riding. Mr. Blakemore served the Cherokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a Council Executive Board Member from 1973 to 1988, Council President from 1984 to 1987, and received the Silver Beaver Award (scouting's highest honor) in 1988. He was the Chairman in 1990 of the Economic Development and Tourism Commission for the City of Bartlesville, was on the Home Savings and Loan Association Board of Directors and chairman of that board in 1980, was a member of Kiwanis International and the Downtown Kiwanis Club, was active as a member of the Board of Directors, as president in 1969, the Downtown Kiwanis Youth Fund Show, "The Curious Savage" in 1968 and had recently received his "60 year member pin". He had also served as a director, secretary-treasurer, Vice President and President in 1966 of the Oklahoma Association of County Agricultural Agents, and served with the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, Inc. as a Board member in 1986, First Vice President in 1989 and President in 1990, had served the Washington County Fair Board as Chairman in 1976 and as President and was named the Historian of the Year in 1990 for the Washington County Historical Society, where he was still a very active member.
Mr. Blakemore was preceded in death by his parents, Una and Ray Blakemore, four brothers, Wayne, Glen, J.D. and Tom, He was also preceded by his wife Dorothy. He is survived by four daughters, Carol Lowe of Sand Springs, Kay Blakemore of Tulsa, Julie Kuykendall and her husband John of Tulsa and Jan Hills and her husband Jeff of Tulsa, seven grandchildren, Kristin Lowe, Geoffrey Lowe, and his wife Rachael, James Ray Kuykendall, Jessie Kuykendall, Natalie Hills, Emma Hills and Abigail Hills, one great grandchild, Alexi Lowe, one sister, Etta Mae Watson of San Pedro, California and one brother, James Blakemore of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
