LAKE LINDEN - Eugene "Pap" Allwin, 79, resident of Lake Linden, passed away July 28, 2011, at Cypress Manor in Hancock where he had been for the last two months.

He was born September 5, 1931, in Lake Linden, a son of Adelord and Mary (Dostaler) Allwin. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and Lake Linden-Hubbell High School. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, serving in Korea. He worked for Bob Codere Logging until 1965. Next, he worked for Calumet & Hecla until 1969. Then, he worked for the Houghton County Road Commission until he retired in 1990. Together with his wife, they owned and operated Betty's Cafe in Lake Linden in the 1960s and Pap's Country Store in Bootjack in the 1970s.

On November 24, 1956, he was married to Gertrude "Betty" Stevens. She passed away on October 16, 1999.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of American Legion Post 90 of Lake Linden and VFW Post 4624 of Hubbell. He was a former volunteer fireman in Lake Linden and Bootjack, and a member of Teamsters Union Local 328.

Pap and his family greatly appreciated the kindness and the care from the staff at Cypress Manor, the Portage Dialysis Unit, and Dr. McConnon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; his son, Frederick "Freddie" Judnich; brothers, Herman and Raymond; sisters, Valerie Messner, Amanda Jolly and Doris Hoffman; niece, Paulette Roy; and nephew, Leo Jolly, Jr.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, Joan Gerard, Mary Rose Moyle, Vernon Jolly, Gloria Wyllie, Gary, Clarence, Allan and James Hoffman; a brother-in-law, F. John Hoffman; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 1, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate. The visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden
