Lawton Man Drops Dead While on His Way to His Home Monday
John Cummings, well known resident of Lawton, dropped dead about 6 o’clock Monday evening while walking east on Second street.
Jack, as he was known to everyone, had been assisting in operating Fred Gibson’s cigar store during the illness and following the recent death of Mr. Gibson. He was on his way home to supper when he was seen to stumble, take a few steps and then fall to the ground near the residence of L.A. Packer. Persons who had seen him fall hurried to the spot, but it was evident that he was past all aid. Dr. Ten Houten of Paw Paw was called and stated that death was due to a heart attack and must have been practically instantaneous. He had apparently been in his usual good health during the day.
Mr. Cummings was 65 years of age and he and his family had resided in Lawton for the past 35 years. Formerly he worked as a teamster, and in more recent years as a trucker. He was particularly good at road building, and had served as highway commissioner of this township. He was a good worker, agreeable and congenial to everyone.
Mr Cummings was born in Pennsylvania of Pennsylvania Dutch parentage. He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Merrill Wragg of Paw Paw, Mrs Edward Anthony, Grant and Donald of Lawton; also a sister Mrs. Elmer Irwin of Lawton, another sister and brother living in Canada; and two grandchildren.
He was a member of the Lawton lodge of Odd Fellows.
The funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at the home on Franklin street. Rev Clarence Hoover will be in charge.
