He moved to Oregon in the early 60's and had a large ranch in Melrose. In the mid 60's he sold the ranch and bought a ranch in Yoncalla, Oregon. He was a very hard worker and continued to raise animals and tend to a large garden on the property before his death at 90 1/2 years old.
He loved to watch the Atlanta Braves and Car Racing. I am researching information that he has a plaque at the Museum in Iowa.

Vernon Gerald Whitaker
WHITAKER, Vernon Gerald – Age 90, of Yoncalla, passed away on Monday, November 3,1997 in a Roseburg care center. He was born May 26, 1907 in Fairbury, Nebraska to Harry Edwin and Minnie (Morava) Whitaker. Vernon grew up in Friend, Nebraska where he married Thelma Cookes, who passed away five years later. In October 1938 he married Katherine Furthmiller in Hartington, Nebraska. Mr. Whitaker worked on various farms in North and South Dakota before settling in Sioux Falls where he was a mechanic and welder for many years. At one time he owned and operated his own business. He owned and drove midget race cars. Vernon enjoyed fishing and watching football games. In 1965 the Whitakers moved to the Roseburg area where they bought a small ranch in the Melrose area. In 1968 they moved to Yoncalla. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Katherine Whitaker of Yoncalla; three daughters, Marguerite Ryne of Belleview, Nebraska, Maurine Pospisil of Midway City, California and Betty DeHolt of Santa Ana, California; six grandchildren, Bruce, Vicky and Marcy Pospisil, Tina and Tammy DeHolt, and Becky Unger and six great-grandchildren. Vernon was also preceded in death by a step-son, Floyd Andrews and a grandson, Steve Pospisil. Interment will be in the Elkton Cemetery in Elkton, South Dakota. LONG & SUCKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
