Ernest Douglas and his lovely bride, Nettie (Antonette) Dodt, on their wedding day in Phoenix. 1916.
The couple had four children: Ella Mae, Mary Ann, Ernest B., and Toni (Antoinette).

Ernest Douglas at his typewriter at home or at The Arizona Farmer-Ranchman offices. As a "mere boy," he would say, he worked for the precursor of The Gazette/Republic, doing his share in the coverage of the Roosevelt Dam dedication. In the early 1920s, he was editor of the Verde Copper News in Jerome. He went on to the precursor to The Mesa Tribune. His work was known throughout the west, in many publications, and his column, "Foxtail Johnson Objects!" was syndicated. He was a great farm writer and a leader in the land and water-conservation movement. In 1981, he was posthumously named to the Arizona Newspaper Association Hall of Fame.

Ernest Douglas, born in a tent near Gila Bend in 1888. His father, Angus, arrived by wagon train -- and his pregnant mom, Ella (nee: Stewart), by train. Ernest did his share of ranching and wrangling as a young man but said he was "bucked off a horse, and when I sat up, I had a typewriter in my lap." Thus, he became a journalist, specializing in agriculture and conservation. He eventually became editor of THE ARIZONA FARMER-RANCHER .(where he was also the infamous "Foxtail Johnson.") He wrote for many additional publications and was highly regarded.
