Mrs. Acuff was born June 27, 1917 in Jerome to a pioneering Arizona family who had homesteaded in the Gila Bend area in 1888. She spent her early years in and around Jerome, where her father, Ernest Douglas, was editor of that city's first newspaper, the Jerome News. She later moved with her family to Phoenix, where her father founded the Arizona Farmer-Ranchman magazine.
She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Phoenix and received an Associate of Arts degree from Phoenix College. She lived in the Casa Grande area after 1946 and was active, along with her late husband, Guy, in a variety of community service organizations. Before her recent decline in health, she owned and operated the Arizona Ciry Independent newspaper
She died June 21, 1995 in Casa Grande.
Mrs. Acuff is survived by two sons, Daniel S, of La Crescenta, California, and Timothy P., of Yuma; a daughter, Anne Sherson, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a brother, Ernest Douglas Jr., of Walnut Creek, California; and a sister, Ella M. Johnson, of Wickenburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an educator and longtime columnist for the Casa Grande Dispatch, and a son, Mark, a journalist in New Mexico and Arizona.
