Mr. Lawrence Alvin Barnwell, Sr., 87, of Fletcher died Monday July 18, 2011 at Universal Healthcare.
Lawrence was born in Henderson County on October 6, 1923 the son of Otto and Elizabeth Holbert Barnwell. He retired from Gerber Foods and was a member of Hooper's Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Southern, Ralph and Alonzo Barnwell and two sisters Vesta Garren and Alice Suttles.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mafrey Biggs Barnwell of the home; one son, Lawrence "Alvin" Barnwell, Jr.; three daughters, Avalina Merrill and her husband Don and Wanda Reeves all of Fletcher and Debbie Buchanan and her husband Bobby of Robbinsville, NC; seven grandchildren, Matthew Fowler, Melissa Warren and Mark Fowler all of Fletcher, Renita Blackwell of Edneyville, Damon Barnwell of Fletcher, Jeremiah Buchanan of Fletcher and Ashley Brown of Robbinsville, NC; and five great-grandchildren, Emily Hopkins of Fletcher, Brandon Warren of Candler, Isaiah and Avery Brown of Robbinsville, NC and Jayden Blackwell of Edneyville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Thursday at Hooper's Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Lawrence Rhodes and Rev. Dewey Barnwell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM UNTIL 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
