He was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Hooper's Creek, where he spent his childhood. He moved to Ohio in the late 1930s and in 1943, he moved to Arizona, where he was a painting contractor. He retired to Hooper's Creek in 1986.
Southern was proceeded in death by his wife, Norma Mayfield Barnwell; two brothers, Ralph and Alonzo Barnwell; two sisters, Vesta Garren and Alice Suttles.
Survivors include his son, Jack Barnwell and his wife, Marlene; brother, Lawrence Barnwell and his wife, Mafrey, along with several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held in Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel.
Burial will be private.
