Charley Andrew Cardwell, son of George Arthur and Agnes Rasmussen Cardwell, was born on the Cardwell Homestead, five miles north of Scandia in Union township, August 16, 1906 and died Sept 10, 1973 at the Republic County Hospital at the age of 67 years and 25 days.
He lived all his life in Republic county. He was a member of the Amana Lutheran church. He received his education in the Elm Grove and Pleasant Grove schools.
On May 8, 1927, he was married to Minnie Wells and they had five children.
He was a member of Albert Isaacson-James Larsen Post No 193 American Legion of Scandia, and the Lions club.
He farmed for several years and then served 28 1/2 years in the postal service in Scandia. He served in World War II entering on Dec 29, 1943. While in the service he served as postal clerk of APO Sand Francisco. He was discharged Oct 31, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Marva Jo.
Survivors are: his wife, Minnie; three sons, John Arthur and wife, Neva of Seneca, Raymond and wife, Irene of Salina, Kenneth and wife, Shirley of Derby; one daughter, Janet and husband, Harold Melhus of Scandia; brothers, Home(r) and wife, Myrtle of Republic, George and wife, Vernice of Scandia; one sister Alice and husband, Duaine Greenslade of Scandia; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept 13 , 10:30 am at the Amana Lutheran church with Pastor Arnold W Wuertz officiating. Interment was in Prairie Rose cemetery with graveside services by the American Legion of Scandia.
