Although there are discrepancies regarding Sheldon's date and place of birth, he was probably born, in Will County, Illinois, on October 10, 1862, to Henry Riker Knowlton and Hannah B. Hoppins.


Sheldon married Edna Osborn, in Grundy County, Illinois, on May 22, 1890.


Edna bore Sheldon five children (three girls and two boys): Albro, Maud, Ada, William, and Edna. Some sources (and family tradition) indicate that all five of these children were given their mother's maiden name, "Osborn," as their middle names.


Sheldon served as a Deputy County Clerk, in Will County, Illinois.


Sheldon died, in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, on September 11 or 12, 1910. His remains were buried, in the Willard Grove Cemetery, in Channahon, Will County, Illinois.

Apparently, the remains of Edna Osborn and her husband, Sheldon Knowlton, share a tombstone, but have, additionally, separate tombstones which read "FATHER" and "MOTHER." Additionally, Sheldon's tombstone has a Masonic Lodge symbol .
