Angela Aloysius de Acosta was known to her family and friends as "Baba". She was the seventh of eight children born to the prominent Spanish/Cuban family de Acosta. Her father was Ricardo de Acosta and her mother was Micaela Hernandez de Alba.

Baba was married to William Gilman Sewell on the 15th of November, 1910 in New York City. William Sewell was connected with a large South African company so they moved there shortly after their wedding. The couple were divorced in Paris in October of 1922.

Baba married Frederic Charlleton Shaw on November 6th, 1922. They had two children, Frederic Miguel Shaw and Mercedes Shaw.

In 1945, Baba became a widow when her husband was killed in a car accident in Germany. Her son, Frederic died on the 17th of April 1951 when the submarine HMS Affray sank in the English Channel off Hurd Deep.
