Hays -- Walter C. Ross Sr., 86, Hays, died Wednesday, June 26, 1996, at Hays Medical Center. Mr. Ross was born Jan. 11, 1910, at rural Hyacinth.

He was a clerk at Mulroy Hotel and Lamar Hotel; worked at the sub depot at Walker Army Base; he and his wife operated the Brunswick Hotel and Cafe; and served as an inspector for the State Food Service and Lodging Board. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Council 1325 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Bishop Cunningham Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, all of Hays.

His wife, Philomene, preceded him in death.

Survivors include five daughters, Shirley Schartz, Betty Pfeifer and Jean Ross, all of Hays, Pat Needy of St. George, Utah, and Marilyn Wasinger of Wichita; a son, Walter "Chuck" Jr. of Hays; and three sisters, Charlotte Dinges of Hays, Thelma Aryan of Milwaukee and Sister M. Aletta of Fond Du Lac, Wis.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, the Rev. Michael Scully officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The Bishop Cunningham Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard at 7 p.m., a vigil will be at 8 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Brock's North Hill Chapel. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays 67601.
