He was born in Brockport, son of the late Jacob Silas and Laura Mae Yale Himes.
He served his country with the United States Army and was a retired automobile technician and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Himes enjoyed his family, the mountains and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Shoffstahl Himes of Indian Trail, N. C.; four children, Sherry Himes (F. C.) Humphries of Lamar, S. C., Michael Joseph (Francesca) Himes, also of Lamar, Melissa Himes (Kenneth) Hughes of Smithfield, N. C., and Susan Gail Himes of Stanfield, N. C.; five grandchildren, Chuck Johnson, Douglas (Lori) Johnson, Jeffrey Fogle, Krystina Himes, and Jacob Hughes; a step-grandson, Gary (Kerry) Humphries; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Himes; two sisters, Norma Himes Bower and Elberta Himes George; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, CoCo.
Funeral services for Herbert Jacob Himes will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lamar Memorial Cemetery.
