Charles Alder was born in about 1836 in King's Stanley, Gloucestershire, England. In 1855 he married Mary Ann "Annie" Lusty and they had 14 children together. While in England Charles and Annie and several of their children worked in the mill and they described their occupation on censuses as "woolen cloth weavers."

Charles and his family attended King's Stanley Baptist Church, which was established in 1640. Charles played the organ and his young children pumped the pedals.

In about 1882 the family immigrated to America. They arrived in the port of Galveston, Texas then traveled to San Antonio, where several members of the family took jobs with the railroad. Charles eventually bought a four block area in Dignowity Hill and divided it into 25 lots, where many of his children built homes for their own families. He seems to have become a real estate investor as there are many records of him buying and selling land in San Antonio.

In 1894 Charles and Annie Alder were divorced after 39 years of marriage. Charles returned to England, where he died seven years later. He is buried in the same grave as his daughter Mary Ann and his granddaughter Amy Eliza. The photograph shows Annie standing by the headstone. When she heard he was ill she immediately left for England but travel was slow then and he had died by the time she arrived.

Inscription

Mary Ann Alder Batters, age 23, her 17 month-old daughter, Eliza Batters and Mary Ann's father Charles Alder, age 65, are all buried in the same grave. When the photograph was taken the inscription was easy to read but it's very faded and worn now. It says:

An Affectionate Remembrance

Mary Ann,
wife of David Batters, of Norbiton, Surrey, and eldest daughter of Charles and Annie Alder, of King ‘s Stanley, Gloucestershire, who fell asleep in Jesus on Tuesday morning September 24th, 1878 in the 23rd year of her age.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 1 Thessalonians 4:14, 15

She fell asleep in Christ her Lord;
She gave to him to keep
The soul his great love had remembered,
Then calmly went to sleep;
And as a tired bird folds its wing,
Sure of the morning light
She laid her down in trusting faith,
And did not dread the night.

Also of Amy Eliza.
Daughter of the above, who died June 23rd, 1879, aged 17 months
For of such is the kingdom of "Heaven;

Also of Charles Alder Father of the above who died Jan 2nd 1901
Aged 65 years.

Smaller stone to the rear reads:
MAB 1878
AEB 1879
CA 1901
