Harry's father died in 1903, when Harry was only four.
In 1904 Harry's mother Katherine married Frederick William Mahland. This couple had one child:
Henry Frederick Mahland 1905-1944
In 1910, Harry Albert Cordes lived with his mother, his sister Anna, step-father, and half-brother on 5th Ave in Brooklyn. At that time, Harry's last name was still Cordes.
On June 17, 1917, Harry enlisted in the Army. By that time he had changed his last name to Mahland. He achieved the rank of Corporal and served overseas in the 106th Infantry from May 1918 to March 1919.
In early 1920, he was once again living with his mother, sister (who had also changed her last name to Mahland), step-father and half-brother. At that time he was working as a machinist for a steamship company.
On September 1, 1920 Harry married Anna Marie Georgina Sengstack. Anna was working as a stenographer in Brooklyn. Harry, like his step-father, worked as a confectioner (candy maker).
Harry and Anna had one child
Jeanne Marie Mahland, 1921-1935
In 1930, Jeanne Marie was living with her mother's parents in Red Hook, NY. She died at the age of 14.
The 1930 census indicates Harry worked as a bookkeeper for an auto company and that Anna was a secretary in a broker's office. The thing is, we are not absolutely sure this record is for this couple. There were several Harry/Henry Mahlands living in Brooklyn at the time and with Harry's changed last name there is some uncertainty about which records apply to him.
What is likely is that Harry and Anna moved to Suffolk County, NY on Long Island, probably before 1940. They both died there and are buried together in the Long Island National Cemetery.
