He was widely known as an expert on the growing of tobacco and pecan production .
A native of Atlanta and had resided in Pierce County from 1914 to 1927 and in Ware County since 1930 .
Mr. Voigt had received the Progressive Farmer's Man of the Year award in 1976 after serving in the early 1970's at Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz' behest on a committee for tobacco for multilateral trade negotiations, which he served as chairman .
He represented Georgia farming interests as a presidential appointee on a three-man commission on energy in 1974 and was cited as "one of the world's tobacco leaders" by Tobacco International magazine in 1977 .
He undertook farm tests of tobacco varieties on his Ware County farm for the Coastal Plain Experiment Station and the College of Agriculture of the University of George and was also involved in pecan farm test programs with these two agencies .
He was a graduate of 11th District Agricultural and Mechanical School , now South Georgia College in Douglas .
He was one of the organizers of supervised recreation in Waycross and served as chairman of the Waycross Recreation Board for 14 years . He was honored by a lighted baseball field being named Fred Voigt Field ...
He served 12 years on the Waycross Board of Education and was a past president of the Dover Bluff Hunting and Fishing Club. He was one of the organizers of the United Georgia Farmers, now the Georgia Farm Bureau.
