William 'Bill' Voigt Jr. , 89 , well known conservationist, died early Saturday morning at his home after being in declining health for some time.
Born in Atlanta but grew up in Blackshear and a son of the late William Voigt and Cecilia Volberg Voigt .
He was a member of Blackshear Presbyterian Church and was active in the Blackshear Rotary Club .
After attending Georgia Tech he worked as a newsman in Blackshear , Ga. , Albany, Ga. , Savannah, Ga. and Atlanta, Ga. before moving west to work for the Oklahoma City Times, Denver Post and the Associated Press' Oklahoma City office.
Mr. Voigt also worked for papers in Tulsa, Kansas City and the New York before becoming AP bureau chief in Pittsburgh, Pa. . He also served on the public relations staff of Carnegie - Illinois Steel.
During World War II he was assigned to Army Ordnance as official historian.
He was active in conservation groups and served as executive director of the Pennsylvania Fish Commission and of the Izaak Walton League of America.
Voigt also wrote many articles for outdoor magazines, particularly " Outdoor America " and a published book, " National Fishing Guide ".
His public service included chairing the National Resources Council of America, serving on the Interior Department's Advisory Committee on Conservation, as secretary of the National Committee on Polices in Conservation Education and as treasurer of the Conservation of Education Association.
He was an honorary life member of the National Resources Council of America. His memberships also included the Outdoor Writers Association, American Fisheries Society and International Association of Game, Fish and Conservation Commissioners.
Mr. William 'Bill' Voigt Jr. is survived by his wife : Mrs. Billie Burke Booth Voigt of Blackshear ,
a sister: Mrs. John K. Kelly of Blackshear
two sister-in-laws:
Mrs. Fred W. Voigt of Waycross , Georgia
Mrs. George F. Voigt of Birmingham, Alabama
and several other relatives .
NO FUNERAL WILL BE HELD
Mr. William Voigt requested that his body be donated to the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia
