Joseph J. Bobeck, M.D., 94, of Sugar Notch, died Tuesday at Mercy Special Care Hospital in Nanticoke. Born June 13, 1914 in Hudson, he was a son of the late John T. and Caroline Domin Bobeck. A member of the Class of 1932 of Plains Memorial High School, he completed his undergraduate studies at Saint Thomas College (University of Scranton) in 1936 and earned his medical doctorate at Hahnemann Medical College in 1940. Dr. Bobeck completed his internship at Wyoming Valley Hospital in 1941 and started his residency at Gowanda State Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. during 1941 and 1942. In September of 1942, he was drafted to serve in the Army Medical Corps during World War II and spent 37 months at Langley Field in Virginia and overseas before being discharged in with the rank of Captain in February of 1946. Dr. Bobeck completed his residency in November of 1946 and opened his private practice in Sugar Notch in December of that year, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Luzerne County Medical Society which recognized him in 1990 for 50 years of service to the practice of medicine, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, International Society of Hypnosis and was a charter member and diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Bobeck was a charter member and first president of the Twin Boro Lions Club and was honored by Lions Club International with the Melvin Jones Award for 40 years of dedicated service. He was a longtime member of Wyoming Valley Country Club. His wife, Agnes Loftus Bobeck, died July 16, 2007; and a son, Joseph, died August 6, 2007; brothers, the Rev. Louis, the Rev. Henry, Anthony and John; and sisters, Cecelia Zielinski, Mae Bobeck and Isabelle Yuscavage also preceded him in death. Surviving are his children, Andrea and her husband, Frank Watkins, of Ocean City, Md., John Bobeck, M.D. of Dallas, Camille and her husband, John Daniels, of Dorrance, James and his wife, Mary Frances Bobeck, of Plains Township, Henry Bobeck, M.D. and his wife, Joan Forgetta Bobeck, M.D., of Dorrance and Ann Bobeck, CAPT, MSC, USN and her husband, Scott Colburn, CAPT, DC, USN, of Annapolis, Md., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. from M.J. McLaughlin Company, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church in Sugar Notch. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Township.
