Mrs Maude Lee McWhirter 86 years of age, and prominent Webster citizen died Thursday morning at her home on Walnut Street. She had lived in Webster 19 years with her son George and daughter-in-law Peggy McWhirter. In addition her two grandchildren and sisters Mrs J.D. Stoval of Italy, Texas and Mrs. H.W. Garrnett of Plainview survive. Funeral services were held at Webster presbyterian church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday the Rev. Alford M. Dorsett officating. The burial was at Forest Park East. Palbearers were Olin Pennington, M. K. Hicks, Vic Watkins, Alan Weber, R.W. Mitchell, W.N. Pell, Honorary pallbearers were sessions and officers and teachers of the Webster Presbyterian Church. jack H. Rowe Funeral Home of League City was in charge in funeral arrangements.
Mrs. McWhirter most of her 86 years in teaching school and doing religious eductional work. She attended Southwest Normal School and three years at the University of Oklahoma. While she was a student there she witnessed the first football game played by the University of Twxas vs, University of Oklahoma.
Her first teaching position was at Midway. Then she taught school at Norman, Oklahoma until her marriage. As was typical in those days she left her teaching career in the public schools but carried over her talents into educational work in the church. She was Christian Educational Director of the Presbyterian Church at Waxahachee, Texas for 18 years. The Rev. Dorsett who conducted her funeral services taught his first Sunday school under her leadership at Trinity College. She taught summer courses in Religious Education at Trinity befor the school moved to San Antonio.
For the past 22 years since her husband's death Mrs. McWhirter has made her home with her son George and his wife Peggy. She took a great intrest in her grandchildren, and her churchlife, and gardening was one of her hobbies.
Frends and fellow church goers at Webster Presbyterian Church, Where she was a member, have set up a Maude McWhirter fund. Theproceedes will be used to erect a memorial to her mmory. A stained glass window has been proposed.
