He was the son of William Gilbert 1776-1836 and Margaret Frier 1777-1822. He had 11 siblings. He married Letitia Ann "Letty" HIATT (1804-1840) on 23 Dec 1824 in Brown Co. OH. They had six children: Pvt. William Gilbert 1825-1864; Margaret 1830 - ?; Elizabeth 1832 - ?; Sarah 1834 - ?; Letty Ann 1836-1916; and Amanda J. "Mandy" Gilbert 1839-1938. The 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records locate John Gilbert in Tippecanoe, IN. John Gilbert was a farmer.
